Link Of The Week

31 March 2008

This week’s link is Google Code University.

This website provides tutorials and sample course content so CS students and educators can learn more about current computing technologies and paradigms. In particular, this content is Creative Commons licensed which makes it easy for CS educators to use in their own classes.

The Courses section contains tutorials, lecture slides, and problem sets for a variety of topic areas:

  • AJAX Programming
  • Distributed Systems
  • Web Security
  • Languages

In the Tools 101 section, you will find a set of introductions to some common tools used in Computer Science such as version control systems and databases.

5GB. Is This For Real?

31 March 2008

5Gb of online content. Is this true? Sounds too good, but it is true. File Dropper is “The Simplest File Hosting Website Ever“, as they say. Upload movies, software, music (all legal, though), all in the limit of 5Gb.

I want to see how long this service will last. Or how long this service will remain unspammed, and pirate-free. Anyway, it’s a great service, helping lots of people.

Look, I just uploaded some AD&D books. If you load something bigger, please let me know.

First 2.5 Post

31 March 2008

This is the first post after upgrading to WordPress 2.5. It went smoother than any other upgrade. I was a little scared after reading some forum discussions about fatal errors and undefined stuff. Not a single problem for me.

Cheers!

Later edit:

  1. I don’t like where the categories are placed, should have been to the right;
  2. I forgot to add tags to this article;
  3. The “Add” button from the tags field is redundant. Or is it?
  4. The “Publish” button should have been bigger. And red! And flashing!

I will get used to the new interface. I’m an up-to-date freak. I like to have the latest version. But as I have learned from my own software, I should wait at least one update after a major release. Like 2.5.1 after this 2.5 release. But I was too anxious to see it in action.

Link Of The Week

28 March 2008

As you’re getting used to it, I sometimes write a “Link Of The Day” or “Link Of The Week” article. Well, this week’s link is SimplePie. Recently updated to 1.1.1 “Blackberry” version, it is currently working on my cgGiant and Club Politica blogs.

SimplePie is a very fast and easy-to-use class, written in PHP, that puts the “simple” back into “really simple syndication”. Flexible enough to suit beginners and veterans alike, SimplePie is focused on speed, ease of use, compatibility and standards compliance.

Buy Me A Beer

27 March 2008

I have recently created an account with PayPal and added the Buy Me A Beer plugin. You can see a pint at the end of each article. Are you wondering why?

I need the money to work on my open-source projects (Butterfly Organizer, adButterfly and butterfly.mailr), my commercial projects (em(phasis)), and to expand a little the work on Butterfly Studios. Every web designer or blogger need a little help along the way, so starting from April the 1st to April the 30th, each person who donates 30 dollars/euros, receives a free copy of em(phasis) JMS (that’s half of its value). This way I get to help other web designers, test my PayPal account and further develop and add new features to em(phasis).
