Whiskey Or Whisky?

19 August 2008

I saw yesterday a car with some whiskey branding, and it was spelled "Whisky". So I started wondering what’s the real spelling of this word.

So I started looking for some help.

Wikipedia says:

Whisky (Scottish Gaelic: uisge-beatha), or whiskey (Irish: uisce beatha or fuisce), refers to a broad category of alcoholic beverages that are distilled from fermented grain mash and aged in wooden casks (generally oak).

Different grains are used for different varieties, including: barley, malted barley, rye, malted rye, wheat, and maize (corn). Whisky derives from the Gaelic word for "water" (uisce or uisge), and is called in full uisge-beatha (in Scotland) or uisce beatha (Ireland), meaning "Water of Life". It is related to the Latin aqua vitae, also meaning "water of life". It is always Scotch whisky (plural: whiskies), and Irish whiskey (whiskeys).

Word History: Many connoisseurs of fine whiskey wouldn’t dream of contaminating their libations with water, but they really can’t avoid it. Not only is water used in distilling whiskey, but the words whiskey and water share a common Indo-European root, *wed-, "water, wet." This root could appear in several guises, as *wed-, *wod-, or *ud-. Water is a native English word that goes back by way of prehistoric Common Germanic *watar to the Indo-European suffixed form *wod-ōr, with an o. Whiskey is a shortened form of usquebaugh, which English borrowed from Irish Gaelic uisce beatha and Scottish Gaelic uisge beatha. This compound descends from Old Irish uisce, "water," and bethad, "of life," and meaning literally "water of life." (It thus meant the same thing as the name of another drink, aquavit, which comes from Latin aqua vītae, "water of life.") Uisce comes from the Indo-European suffixed form *ud-skio-. Finally, the name of another alcoholic drink, vodka, comes into English from Russian, where it means literally "little water," as it is a diminutive of voda, "water"—a euphemism if ever there was one. Voda comes from the same Indo-European form as English water, but is differently suffixed: *wod-ā. Whiskey, water, and vodka—etymology can mix a potent cocktail.

So I’ll stick to my "Whiskey" spelling and my Whiskey Air WordPress theme.

Building Brands

18 August 2008

I spent 6 years building my Butterfly Media Romania brand locally, here in Romania. It’ll take about half this time to build it worldwide. One year has already passed, and I’m happy about the result.

I did another change to the main site adding more detail and focus to the brand. I did neglect my main Butterfly Media Romania web site for a while, and now it’s time to get it up again. The services, the products, the portfolio, all these pages needed a little spice up. It’s still in progress but you check it out to see how it looks.

Monday Morning Inspiration

18 August 2008

It’s 6 o’clock in the morning. I just woke up and I decided to go out and get some inspiration. The city was waking up, vehicles, people, dogs, cats. I also noticed how dirty my city can be. I also noticed some new shops and a nice tower getting built somewhere around where I live.

It’s good to walk in the morning air. I really got inspired for about 10 articles. I went home after 2 hours and started writing. And checking my web accounts.

Oh, I’m really sorry I did not get my camera with me, to get some photos of my city, but I’ll do it next week. Actually, speaking about photos, I have a great idea for a web site, but I’ll keep the secret until I got some real information.

I upgraded some of my blogs to WordPress 2.6.1. Everything went smooth as always. WordPress is great.

I installed Windows Live Writer and I’m testing it right now. It’s really useful when I’m not online and I don’t want to use text documents.

See you around.

1000 Thousand Posts A Week

18 August 2008

I’ve been doing a real writing marathon this week and had no time to write any more articles. The title is real, I had a lots of posts to write for Phancee Recipes and a local recipes blog. All the recipes were already written in a huge text document — another marathon ;)

The recipes’ blogs are meant to bring some passive income in no more than 6 months.

The limit of 1000 posts was actually broken, as I was writing day and night to provide the search engines some meat.

eBook Collection: Java

16 August 2008

I decided to share all my eBooks on programming. This week is Java.

Java is a programming language originally developed by Sun Microsystems and released in 1995 as a core component of Sun Microsystems’ Java platform. The language derives much of its syntax from C and C++ but has a simpler object model and fewer low-level facilities. Java applications are typically compiled to bytecode that can run on any Java virtual machine (JVM) regardless of computer architecture.
