HTML 5 And CSS 3 Fever

27 January 2010

While looking at my current theme bugs (Whiskey Air), I decided to take the next step and turn it into a full HTML 5 template.

So, after reading a bit of HTML 5 literature, I started changing the theme, bit by bit. I will release it free after doing all changes. I might even to add it to WordPress themes repository.

  • So, the upcoming tasks should be:
  • Use a framework -  I found 52Framework and I must check it out.
  • Use strict standards.
  • Completely drop IE6 support – If you don’t agree with me on this, the following code should take care of your needs:
#someElement {
 background: red; /* modern browsers */
 *background: green; /* IE 7 and below */
 _background: yellow; /* IE6 exclusively */
}
  • Make the theme compatible with 2.9 – 3.x only – No backwards compatibility for comments and widgets.
  • Add custom functions and widgets.
  • Add documentation.
  • Release.

StreetScene Follow-Up

I can’t help watching and playing with the videos in my previous article. Immersive Media has more movies on their demos page here.

Can’t wait to see what new demos they bring up, as promised.

Immersive Media Street Scene – Next Generation Street View

26 January 2010

Google and Immersive Media are working on a next generation Street View technology, StreetScene. Possible applications of this new technology are many and will change dramatically the way one interacts and explore 360° worlds end environments.

I’ve always enjoyed walking inside Google’s Street View environment, but the following movies are way beyond the current technology.

It just ocurred to me being at a virtual concert and looking wherever I want, or focusing on diferrent instruments. Or a sports event with a camera mounted on top of the playing field.

Google SEO – Better Late Than Never

9 January 2010

Q: Does this mean that Google will always ignore the keywords meta tag?
A: It’s possible that Google could use this information in the future, but it’s unlikely. Google has ignored the keywords meta tag for years and currently we see no need to change that policy.

These were rumours a year ago, and SEO experts had different versions of the truth. The Google giant search engine ignores keywords. Simple as that.

With an official statement, I’d better move on and delete all keywords meta tags from my sites. It’ll definitely save a few bytes per visitor.

The official example from Google is:

Suppose you have two website owners, Alice and Bob. Alice runs a company called AliceCo and Bob runs BobCo. One day while looking at Bob’s site, Alice notices that Bob has copied some of the words that she uses in her “keywords” meta tag. Even more interesting, Bob has added the words “AliceCo” to his “keywords” meta tag. Should Alice be concerned?

Well, that’s great. No more stealing keywords and ranking for them. I used to do this NOT with keywords but with related phrases inside my pages. The relatedness could go further depending on the scope of the article.

Should I care about other search engines? No. I’ve heard they played along.
