Blog Tycoon’s New Groove

3 February 2010

Did you notice Blog Tycoon’s new theme? It’s still Whiskey Air, but this time it’s dark. And green.

While the light one lacked some functionality and had some errors, I found some time to change some colours and I ended up with completely redoing the design. If you wonder if that’s a “30″ up there, it is. It’s my current age. And I want to live to change the 3 to 4.

The markings and icons below the logotype are my other brands and projects. Also notice the More Articles section below the main 5 posts. Yeah, I know you want a tutorial on that so stay tuned.

I also signed up with Behance and Carbonmade and I’ll soon add my portfolio there.

WordPress And Themes

20 November 2009

Rainy day - Winter is coming

As the winter is getting closer, and I finish all clients projects (except from SEO), I decided to write some premium WordPress themes. I haven’t decided if I’d sell them or release them as open source, but it’s a fact that I’ll give the community three fresh themes.

Another winter idea is porting some CMS themes to WordPress. I already spotted some interesting Joomla themes, maybe I’ll port some phpBB themes, and several other well-known content management systems.

November is the month of updates and optimizations. I recently launched my hosting offer for Romania, together with a home page redesign, see it here, and several more optimizations. I’m adding cache instructions, Gzip output buffering and theme tweaking to all my personal sites, and, in my spare time, to my clients’ sites. It’s a common practice for resellers to tweak and optimize the server’s load every now and then.

Also, the change from blog.butterflymedia.ro to blogtycoon.net, required many accounts to be changed, such as Technorati, Feedburner, Blog Catalog, webmaster tools for Google, Yahoo and Bing, Google Analytics and many more.

I also added Google AdSense to all my feeds, and now I’m waiting for the results. I still need a new logo, a bit of tweaked identity, a branding manual, some whitepapers, and lots and lots of promotion. They’re work in progress.

Corporate Mistakes

17 February 2009

corporate-mistakes

I’m talking about corporate web sites. I did the same mistakes ever and ever again. How many times have you seen a web design company website with an outdated copyright year in the footer? Countless times. This is one of them I’m sure the company is doing just fine, and the latest project just ended a week ago. Why not update the site?

The corporate website is often neglected and the design is ugly and outdated. It was hip 5 years ago, but now it simply doesn’t appeal anymore. So what, they have a marketing department dealing with clients, why should they update and redesign the site?

And when the time finally comes, the costs are exaggerated. They need a new CMS, new SEO strategies, new promotion tactics, a lot of custom programming for stuff like useless AJAX widgets, JavaScript clocks and Flash splash pages.

I decided to use WordPress for my company web site and it’s running just great. Easy to update, easy to add or remove widgets, and it’s very easy to present my services both in Romanian and in English. I decided to keep te products section in English as Butterfly Organizer, .mailr, em(phasis) and Query Admin receive a lot of visits from many countries. All the other sections such as services, portfolio, gallery and contact have been written in Romanian, because this is my primary target.

Another change I will be doing soon is to move the themes from the company site to this blog. The main website is for presentation and portfolio only.

SEO Or Redesign?

26 June 2008

SEO or redesign? This questions troubled me for a while now. As the majority of my blogs are fully SEOed, either by SEO plugins, backlinks, valid sitemaps and more, I needed a change, a refresh. So I decided to change some things.

The official Butterfly Media Romania web site features WordPress and has the same theme as the blog. Identity, right? Theme consistency. I wouldn’t want to fool my readers. I will keep updating my scripts and my WordPress themes on the main site, just like on the blog.

The Butterfly Media Romania theme (both the web site and the blog) will get a major overhaul in the following days, for more stability, validity, faster loading times and less cluttering.

I will also dig a little deeper into affiliate marketing, but that’s another story in another evening.
