For those of you who did not find out yet, Twitter released a new button feature, similar to what TweetMeme tried to implement, and to Digg style buttons. The new button, which can be seen and tested at the end of this post, has a slicker appearance and shows the total number of tweets.

The Digg style Twitter button code is the following:

<a href="http://twitter.com/share" data-count="vertical" data-via="butterflymedia">Tweet</a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js"></script>

My Twitter style code is the following:

<a href="http://twitter.com/share" data-count="horizontal" data-via="butterflymedia">Tweet</a><script type="text/javascript" src="http://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js"></script>

Replace butterflymedia with your own Twitter username.

For further customization, try the Twitter goodies page here, or, if you prefer to dig deeper and adventure yourself in API land, visit the developer’s API section. You can configure almost everything, starting from colours to language to multiple Twitter usernames.
